Local Technology Firm, ECD, Celebrates 50 Years of Innovation During Recent Anniversary Event

Posted on Jun 09, 2014

June 9, 2014 – Last week, local Milwaukie-based technology firm, ECD, hosted vendors, customers and partners at a special event to celebrate the company’s 50th year. With products and services designed and manufactured to enable the printed circuit board assembly and baking processes, ECD is best known for its former aqueous cleaning systems and for revolutionizing electronics thermal processes with the development of the M.O.L.E.® suite of thermal profiling tools. ECD’s rich history includes broad experience in electronics and other industries including baking, industrial and solar.

Founded in 1964 by Rex Breunsbach, ECD began its existence as an engineering firm that designed, engineered and built products for other companies much like today’s contract manufacturing operations. “We started designing electronic controls for some unique products like cherry pit detectors and kidney dialysis machines before expanding into electronics assembly and printed circuit board manufacturing,” explains Breunsbach, who is downsizing his role at ECD this year and handing the reigns to President, Todd Clifton. “But, it wasn’t until we had ECD-branded aqueous cleaning systems that we really became known in the electronics industry.”

ECD’s line of aqueous printed circuit board (PCB) cleaning machines was brought to market in 1978 and remained the company’s core offer until it developed FlowTRACK, a tool that integrated with electronics soldering systems to offer more automatic process control. FlowTRACK’s ability to profile the soldering process was the precursor to ECD’s development and launch of the M.O.L.E. thermal profiling system in 1986. The cleaning system business was ultimately sold in 1998.

“The M.O.L.E.® thermal profiler, which then led to SuperM.O.L.E.® and ultimately SuperM.O.L.E.® Gold 2, is arguably the most impactful technology ever developed by ECD,” says Breunsbach with pride. “We have seen significant changes in the electronics industry over the last 50 years and dramatic shifts in thermal processing have underscored the need for products like the M.O.L.E.® line of profilers.”

Greg Wallwork was the second employee at ECD and has held numerous roles from operations and manufacturing through to financial oversight, which he still manages today as the company’s CFO. He recalls the company’s growth and transformation from a contract manufacturer to a developer and supplier. “I think at the heart of ECD, whether we were engineering and building products for other companies or innovating our own technologies, there is and always has been a desire to be problem solvers and solution providers. ECD is home to very dedicated, insightful and intelligent people who continually strive to WOW our customers and that hasn’t changed at all in our 50-year history.”

The celebratory event, which was held on June 5th at ECD headquarters, included a look back at ECD’s 50 years of innovation, comments from employees about significant company milestones and expressions of gratitude for the retiring founder, and the introduction of the team that will lead the company’s future growth.

“These last 50 years have been filled with significant innovation, many successes and the development of some long-lasting relationships,” says Breunsbach in conclusion. “I have no doubt the next 50 years will be just as exciting for ECD and its customers!”
