When to Calibrate

Why is calibration important?

System calibration is vital in any application where measurements are important; it enables users and businesses to have confidence in the processes they monitor, results they record, and operations they subsequently control.

Uncalibrated equipment can pose a number of risks, including safety, poor quality, liability and expense.

What exactly is calibration?

Instrument calibration is simply the comparison of an instrument under test to a known standard. One measurement device – the control — is known to have the ‘correct’ measurement accuracy, while the second device’s accuracy is unverified. Calibrating against a control device proves that an instrument is performing accurately and its measurements valid. The main reasons for calibration are to ensure the reliability of the instrument, to determine the accuracy of the instrument and to verify that readings are consistent with other measurements. If equipment isn’t calibrated regularly, accuracy and reliability are in question.

The Importance of the ISO 17025 Standard

With commonalities to the ISO 9000 standard, the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is the internationally-recognized quality management system standard for laboratory accreditation. Unlike ISO 9000, this standard includes both management and technical requirements. A documented Quality Management System (QMS) stands at the heart of this accreditation and applies to organizations that produce testing and calibration results.

What does this mean to you?

Trusting that the measurement instrument you rely upon for quality assurance remains accurate is essential. Continual verification that your profiler is performing to specification is the process. Maintaining N.I.S.T. traceability via an accredited Quality Management System is the preferred method. The Conformance Certificate is the proof; this is the satisfaction and audit trail documentation of best manufacturing practices.
